Self publishing: Death by typo!

Have you ever considered self publishing or have you recently self published your novel? If you’ve recently self published a novel, how many times did you read it before you actually published it? Be honest, and please, please, say a lot more than just once or twice.

10 times? 20 maybe?? It’s tough isn’t it? Reading and then re-reading the same stuff, over and over and over, and then a couple of times more. Even though you totally love your story and you’re delighted it’s finally finished, it’s a real slog, right? And then, just when you think it’s all completely wonderful and it’s actually published, out there for the whole world to eagerly read and totally enjoy…

… you find a bloody typo and it makes you want to weep!

Writing a decent sized book is no easy task, it takes a lot of dedication and, at the very least, a bit of an obsessive personality. I’m sure lots of people finally begin writing their much talked about novel and then after 20 or 30 pages start to realise that it’s no walk in the park on a summer’s day.

Cut Limbo started off as a 94 minute movie script and due to lack of interest got shelved for 5 years, (a tad optimistic considering I’ve zero Hollywood contacts) so as an actual story, it took more than 10 years to complete. The original idea began whilst working at Schipol Airport, Amsterdam, basically, it was a story that had to be told. The world just had to know how bizarre the whole Schipol situation was and that no other airport could even come close to Schipol. Why? Because Amsterdam is the Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll capital of world.

OK, let’s face it, regardless of your genre, regardless of how original or outrageous your novel is, if you write 426 pages, there’s a good chance you’ll initially find a typo or two, right?

Cut Limbo for satire lovers...

Then you’ll check a couple more times and probably find a couple more, maybe find a miss placed comma or semi-colon, it happens during the creative process. It’s just bound to.

Writers get too close to their work, they become so familiar with it that they only see what they want to see and that’s where proof readers come in, but who can afford a proof reader?

Cut Limbo is 107,457 carefully chosen words, lovingly put together over a 10 year period, that’s 622,146 characters. Over half a million characters, that’s quite few, right? I wonder how many I deleted during the process?

I couldn’t afford a proof reader, although I did follow one on Twitter and Tweeted her recently; she told me her prices were very affordable. Maybe they are, that kind of stuff’s all relative to the amount of funds you have available, right? Frankly, I’d rather spend a few hundred pounds on my kids. (They often need warm clothes and hot food this time of year! LOL!)

Cut Limbo for satire fans... spread the word.

So, death by typo! I have sold a few copies of Cut Limbo during the soft launch and I hope the people who bought these appreciate that they now own collectors items, because I’m going in to re-edit and sort the typo and the misplace semi-colon real soon.

I guess it didn’t matter too much to some people as they gave Cut Limbo great reviews, they were kind enough to appreciate the story rather than get emotional about tiny errors. I guess the humour, the situation and the bizarre characters were entertaining enough and I’m very grateful for that. Let’s face it, we all come across typos in even the most high profile novels, novels published by the top publishers and written by the best writers. That’s just life, right?

Cut limbo kindle

The Cut Limbo BIG launch is happening, Cut Limbo will be available on Kindle quite soon and that’s likely to change the readership significantly. I am still testing out my totally new Social Media book reading concept and that will definitely happen pre-launch. As I said before, I’m 100% sure lots of other writers, and maybe even publishing houses, will copy my simple yet innovative idea.

We shall see. It’s exciting, that’s for sure, because new Social Media ideas always are; my blog post about Google+ was my most read blog post ever! OK, I’m not saying this will be as important to the world of Social Media as Google+ was or even close, but it will certainly create a lot of discussion and possibly a little controversy.

Please feel free to share this any way you can, Tweets, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Google+, whatever, and look out for the BIG Cut Limbo launch, it’s coming soon…
